What is Pupillary Distance (PD)?

Pupillary Distance (PD) is the measurement (in millimeters) from the center of one pupil to the center of the other. This ensures that your prescription lenses are properly aligned for clear and comfortable vision.

Most adults have a PD between 54mm and 74mm. If your optometrist provided two values (e.g., 31/32), these represent the distances from the center of your nose to each pupil. To get a single PD value, simply add them together (31 + 32 = 63mm).

Understanding Dual PD Values

• If you receive two PD numbers with a difference of 3mm (e.g., 62/59), the larger value is your distance PD, used for regular prescription glasses.
• The smaller value is for reading glasses and is only needed for near-vision prescriptions.

How to Measure Your PD

If your PD was not included in your latest prescription but is available from a previous eye exam, you can use that value since PD remains stable in adults. However, for children, it may change over time.

If you don’t have a recorded PD, you can measure it yourself:

Steps to Measure PD at Home

1. Have someone assist you – A friend or family member will get the most accurate result.
2. Use a millimeter ruler – Place it just below your eyes.
3. Look straight ahead – Focus on a distant object to keep your pupils steady.
4. Measure from pupil center to pupil center – Ensure the ruler is aligned and note the measurement in mm.
5. Repeat for accuracy – Take multiple readings and use the average.

⚠️ Do not estimate your PD or try to measure it using existing glasses. This cannot provide an accurate measurement.
